UK Bed Sizes Guide: Single, Double, King & Super King

bed sizes, UK bed sizes, king size bed, super king bed, bedroom planning

Buying a bed is exciting, but getting the size wrong is an expensive mistake. A bed that is too big makes a room feel cramped, and one that is too small can leave you short on comfort. UK bed sizes also have their own names, which can be confusing if you are not sure what a “small double” or a “super king” really means.

This guide lists the standard UK sizes, shows you how to measure your room, and helps you pick the best fit. Because every DreamCraft Furniture bed is made to order, you can choose the size that suits your room.

Standard UK bed and mattress sizes

Which size is right for you?

90 x 190 cm

Single (3ft)
Suits one sleeper in a children’s room, a teenager’s room or a guest room. Also a good fit for a box room, where floor space is tight.
120 x 190 cm

Small double (4ft)
Gives one adult extra width without taking up as much space as a full double. A practical choice for a small spare room.
135 x 190 cm

Double (4ft 6)
A popular size for couples in smaller bedrooms, or for single sleepers who like to stretch out. Two adults will have enough room, but it can feel snug for taller people.
150 x 200 cm

King (5ft)
Gives each partner more personal space and is a very popular choice for main bedrooms. It also offers extra length compared with a standard double.
180 x 200 cm

Super king (6ft)
The biggest standard size, ideal for couples who want real room, for those who share the bed with children or pets, and for taller sleepers. It needs a large bedroom to look and feel right.

How to measure your room before you buy

  1. 1Measure the room. Note the length and width, and mark where doors, windows and radiators sit.
  2. 2Plan the bed’s position. Place it so the door can open fully and nothing blocks the way.
  3. 3Leave walking space. As a rule of thumb, aim for around 60 cm on each side you will use, so you can get in and out and make the bed easily.
  4. 4Allow for the frame. The frame, headboard and any footboard make the whole bed larger than the mattress, so measure with those in mind.
  5. 5Think about storage. If you are choosing drawers or an ottoman base, leave room for them to open.

If you are weighing up storage styles, our comparison of a divan bed vs an ottoman bed will help.

Do not forget delivery access

Before you order
A bed that fits the room still has to get there. Measure the front door, hallway, staircase and bedroom door, and make sure the furniture can turn corners. For large or customised beds, customers are responsible for making sure the property has suitable access.

Our Delivery & Returns page explains what to check before delivery.

Choose a mattress that matches

Your mattress must match your bed base, so decide the size first and then pick the mattress. Our guide to choosing a mattress explains firmness and types, and you can browse the mattress collection once you know your size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a king and a super king?
A king is 5ft (150 cm) wide and a super king is 6ft (180 cm) wide. Both are about 200 cm long, so the super king is simply wider, giving each person more space.
Is a double big enough for two people?
Yes, a 4ft 6 double fits two adults, but each person has less room than in a king. Many couples prefer a king or super king if the bedroom allows it.
Is the bed frame bigger than the mattress?
Yes. The frame, headboard and any footboard add to the overall size, so always check the full dimensions on the product page before you buy.
Can I order a size that is not on the list?
Our beds are manufactured to order, so if you need something specific, contact us before ordering and we will tell you what is possible.
